Highly recommend doing the sunrise lava boat tour!!! The captain was great despite high winds, and his brother was a great tour guide throughout our trip. When you approach the lava, the sky is filled with beautiful stars.. and you can see red out in the distance. You stay by the lava and watch the formations for the perfect amount of time for photos and just spectating. Then the sun comes up and you get to ride back.. and see some lava tubes and rainbows!!! Best part of our big island time!

We did the sunrise hike and it was really good. Nicer to hike up in the dark when it's not warm and watch the lava and the sunrise. There are also less people around. Worth the effort of getting there at 4am. The guide was from a local family and very nice and friendly. We saw a lot of surface flows. Definitely worth it.
Knowledgeable guides delivered the goods (best path to the surface lava flows) with consideration for all members of the tour.
These guys were brilliant! Much prefer the smaller boat as it is less bumpy and our captain was an expert maneuvering around the lava front. The larger boat next to us looked like only one side was getting a view and was very crowded (there were also a few poor people hanging over the side
