Do your research upfront! This is the only viewing point to see the lava and it is NOT located in the Vulcanoes National park. Don't go there during the day by yourself as you might be denied of the access or the ability to park your car as it is a residential area. Go there in the late afternoon like 4-5. Park your car there and rent a bike (you can also hike and eat their dust). There are plenty of stalls renting them. At the end of the trial you can view the lava flowing in to the sea from the Lava View Point. The red glow is only visible when it is dark. If you want to view the lava up close you are allowed to walk around, make sure to follow the groups who has a guide. Better yet book a guided tour and these folks will exactly know where to go. Other option is to book a boat tour, but pretty $$$$.
Pretty awesome! You're still far but can hear the grumble as the lava enters the water. Loved it.
Once in a lifetime experience. If it's flowing, be sure to visit it. But be ready for physically exerting biking and hiking.
Great experience! We went twice, hiking and biking. Hiking was so much better, especially coming back under the stars. Biking was too hectic with too many other bikes and having to avoid hikers. We watched the lava flow into the ocean the first time (around 100 yards waking on the lava to the viewing area, not too bad) and second time, we hiked "up the hill" about 1/2 hour on the lava field to see the red hot lava woozing out of the ground. I'm surprised that they allow you so close to the hot lava. You need 32-64 ounces of water, not a gallon per person that the ranger station recommends. Take a strong flashlight if you are hiking on the lava after dark.
Long but not difficult hike or you can rent a bike from one of the many vendors. The last bit is a scramble over lava fields and requires careful attention or a fall on the sharp lava rock could be painful. The view of lava pouring into the ocean is totally worth the effort. Bring binoculars or camera with zoom as you are not too close to the lava for safety reasons. It will take an hour or two to walk to where you can see the lava. Plan to arrive with enough time to get to the view point at sunset as the glow of the lava is best from sunset to after dark. Bring water snacks and flashlights
