We had a great experience with Active Lava Hawaiian Tours. By doing a tour with them you get to bypass the gates at the vendor area at the end of the paved road and drive further in to the "town" on the lava field. This gave us a quiet parking spot and access to a restroom while we got to see how people live in self-sufficient houses on the lava field. It also shortens the distance you have to ride. Michelle was a great guide with knowledge of the history of the flows and shows respect for this amazing natural phenomenon. The provided 21 speed mountain bikes made the ride very manageable. The lava flow is always changing, but it was an amazing sight on this night.
This was a fantastic tour. We originally missed our scheduled tour because we were on the wrong side of the Chain of Crater Road (1.5 hrs to get to the other side). It was our mistake. Michele was very accommodating and slotted us in for another tour two days later. Hans was our amazing guide. He was watchful and safety was always top of mind. Although the hike was quite strenuous, it was well worth it to see lava just a few feet away. Hans knew the terrain well and we all came back safe and sound. This is a dangerous hike without a guide, even for the experienced hiker. Active Lava Hawaiian Tours is the company to fulfill this bucket list item!
We hiked to see the lava flow without booking with any company. It's just a free, somewhat public area.
Note: you absolutely want to use a tour guide. I can’t imagine how people could ever navigate their way through the lava fields without one. It can be incredibly treacherous if you don’t know where you’re going, and where to step. You really need a tour guide, and Michelle and her team are just awesome.
We were in this area and walked down to see the lava flow into the ocean. We did not book with this particular company (we did rent bikes from a nearby bike rental stand). They may be a 5 star company; I'm just putting this review in because Google insists that I've been to this place.
We had a great tour with Michelle. We took a van 2 miles up the emergency access road, then biked the remaining 1.8 miles to the ocean vent. After that we hiked 4 miles in the lava fields on top of the lava tube. It was nice to have someone to show us where to safely walk and secret spots to look for lava flow. She knew the ins and outs and took us places we never would have ventured alone. Well worth the price! It's basically insurance on your life, don't be cheap and don't explore alone.
You may have a better experience if you book with one of the local guides.
This was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had. Michele is both an amazing and adept guide, and just an overall amazing, fun person. We had such a blast. We got up close and personal with some real molten lava flow, and learned a whole lot on the way. It definitely was a workout, and I didn’t know I could sweat that much, but god, it was a blast.
