Not so great bikes but at a decent price for what you need them for
We locals all go with KCT - I just went out early October 2016 and rode a nice/smooth/fast specialized bike (they have like 50+ super nice ones!) and got right up to the lava flow (approx 6 miles?). Worth every penny, learned interesting history. Ethical, hard-working Native Hawaiian company who treats everyone with ALOHA... absolutely MAGICAL LAVA & experience!!!! (Photos don't do the lava justice...)

This was a once in a lifetime experience! We rented the motor assisted bikes and thank goodness we did... We are middle aged and not in the best shape and this was quite a long distance, up hill. I gave a 4 star rating only because the clerk at the checkout in the beginning suggested we do an hour hike to find the lava coming from the mountain. We thought that would be cool so we tried. The instructions she gave were so vague that we and many others wondered around the extremely difficult to navigate lava fields in the dark for 3 hours without ever finding the fresh lava. We were not the only people that didn't see it. We asked everyone who did the hike, no one else did either. Some people had small children. I would never suggest a hike on an unmarked trail through a sharp as glass lava field in the dark. It was a fun adventure for us but I can't even imagine doing that with small children. But putting that aside, it was neat to see the lava flowing into the ocean although, it was very far away. I would suggest bringing a pair of binoculars.
