Been to Kalapana and rented bikes a few times over the past few years, and came again this year ('17) with our 3 kids to pedal out and see the lava. Jeff's Bikes is far and away the best rental operation going. Best bikes and bike selection, best bike conditions, best bike lights (which you really will need, and Jeff and his folks are friendly and efficient. They shared great, up to date info about lava viewing conditions, handed us a map printed that day about surface lava flow conditions, were really helpful sizing bikes for our kids, and the extra water and snack was appreciated. Strongly and enthusiastically recommended. Jeff's Bikes is a top flight, 5 star operation, and I will use Jeff's Bikes when I hopefully return next year. ... Avoid other vendors here who have rented us bikes with bent cranks, broken brakes and shifters, and lights masking-taped to our handlebars, like we got last year.

Super nice people. Good quality bikes at fair price. Very accommodating. Had tag along extension for my bike and trailer for my brother's. Shifter bike was a little intimidating for 7 and 8 year olds.
This is the place! Great service (I guess from Jeff?) and sturdy bikes in a variety of sizes, including some for tall people. Tires freshly inflated, water provided, super-bright headlamps for the ride and hike to the lava flows. These lamps were critical in our excursion and more than twice as bright as any we found at the local Walmart. A huge perk, don't underestimate their utility.
