Best to go in the morning or even when it rains.
Amazing way how to spend 2 hours of your life; easy walk around the cliff on the top of caldera through a rainforest like forest and afterwards surreal passage over hardened lava...never seen anything like it before. Hard to imagine all the crater bubbling with 1000C hot lava! Wow.
If you're in the overflow lot, you'll be going down the gradual slope and going back up the steeper steps.
Meandering through 50yr old crater which erupted in magnificent way sending lava fountains 2000ft high is a must to do hike in Hawaii Volcanoes NP. Hike changes from rain forest to baron bottom of crater. Several steam vents dot the crater and become active if it rains.
Getting a parking spot under the trees is best so that the car isn't extremely hot when you return.
A really beautiful hike. Be careful though, there are cracks and the ground can be quite bumpy. I suggest bringing a hiking stick. The hike takes you around part of the crater, down into the crater, across it, and then back up to the crater rim. The hike back up is very steep and exhausting.
The crater itself has a lot of breeze, buts it's still an open area under the sun. Took maybe 2 hours to finish with many stops.
One of the better hikes in the park. Do first thing to avoid the heat and crowds. Take lots of water and some snacks. Hiking pole would be good as well. View in bottom of crater is amazing.
Enter the trail through the right side from the main parking lot. This would meaning going down steeper steps and coming back up during a gradual slope.
