A stone's throw from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and the region's black-sand and green-sand beaches, the Gay Hawaii B&B Guest House is a fantastic option for those on a budget in a very expensive part of the planet. What you get beyond a great deal: exceptional cleanliness, friendliness, and ultra-healthy breakfasts. The location in Kalapana is ideal for exploring all of Puna: it's a quick ride from Kehena's fabled (clothing optional) black sand beaches, the historic town of Pahoa, the otherworldly lava flows that have smothered the coast and most of Kalapana town itself. The B&B has 2 "hale" or homes, and a total of 12 rooms. The owner and staff are informative and enthusiastic about the area they live in--and are more than happy to include guests in the community's many activities. The gay and lesbian community enjoys an undercurrent of pre-preacher Polynesian acceptance of alternative sexuality and family arrangements. The folks at the B&B advise potential guests that the entire neighborhood, guest houses included, are "nudist-friendly." So if clothes cramp your style, no one here's going to complain. Another treat: several outdoor showers -- the indoor showers at Gay Hawaii B&B are understandably underused. While the area has plenty of decent places to stay, you cannot beat the quality/price ratio at GHB&B. The staff, owner, and neighbors are happy you're there - and it shows.
